Partners
PCVPC is funded by a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of the Urban Partnership Academic Centers of Excellence (UPACE).
From the inception of PCVPC, researchers from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, The University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Drexel University have joined with members of the Philadelphia Area Research Community Coalition (PARCC) as co-investigators and core directors. PARCC is a coalition of community-based organizations whose mission is to "establish and facilitate effective long-term and sustainable research partnerships between community organizations and institutions that have a shared vision and leadership to change and improve the health of the community in West and Southwest Philadelphia."
The current collaborators in PCVPC represent unique and diverse areas of community and academic expertise. Together, these partners decide how to implement programs and create useful and meaningful information that supports the community's ability to reduce the incidence of violence.
National Network of Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs (NNHVIP)
Along with the Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice (CNSJ) at Drexel and the Firearm and Injury Center at Penn (FICAP), PCVPC serves as the Philadelphia headquarters of the NNHVIP, a partnership of programs around the country that provide intervention services to individuals being treated for violent injuries. The philosophy of these programs is that violence is preventable and that trauma centers and emergency rooms have a golden moment of opportunity at the hospital bedside to engage with a victim of violence and to stop the cycle of violence. The Network's purpose is to strengthen existing programs and help develop similar programs in communities across the country. For more information, visit www.nnhvip.org.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The Division of Violence Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/dvp/YVP/default.htm) is funding PCVPC through a cooperative agreement as one of the two Urban Partnership Academic Centers of Excellence (UPACE). It is the first UPACE to be based in Philadelphia. In 2005, the CDC also funded eight Academic Centers of Excellence as part of a national violence prevention initiative.
