Principal Investigators

John P. Dormans, MD

Dr. Dormans is the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Co-Director of the Fellowship program, as well as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His areas of expertise include tumors, scoliosis and other disorders of the spine, and general pediatric orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Dorman’s research interests include pediatric spinal deformity and musculoskeletal tumors.

Roger Cornwall, MD

Dr. Cornwall is the Division’s hand and upper extremity surgeon, as well as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His areas of expertise include the brachial plexus, hand/wrist fractures and problems, and ganglion cysts. Dr. Cornwall’s research interests includesurgery of the pediatric hand and upper extremity.

Ben Chang MD

Dr. Chang’s research focuses are congenital hand differences and melanoma.

Richard S. Davidson, MD

Dr. Davidson is a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennslyvania School of Medicine. His areas of expertise include the foot and ankle, hip, clubfeet, limb length discrepancy and angular deformity. Dr. Davidson’s research interests include deformities of the foot and ankle, as well as lower and upper extremity reconstruction with a special interest in the use of external fixation.

Denis S. Drummond, MD

Dr. Drummond is Emeritus Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery, Co-Director of the Fellowship Program, and the Director of Research in the division, as well as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine His areas of expertise include scoliosis and other disorders of the spine and hip, and neuromuscular disorders. Dr. Drummond’s research interests include surgical correction of spinal injuries and deformities.

Malcolm L. Ecker, MD

Dr. Ecker’ is a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Meidicine. His areas of expertise include scoliosis and other disorders of the pediatric spine, general pediatric orthopaedics and fractures. Dr. Ecker’s research interests include pediatric spinal disorders.

John M. Flynn, MD

Dr. Flynn is a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His areas of expertise include scoliosis and other disorders of the spine, hip disorders, fractures, sports medicine and cerebral palsy. Dr. Flynn’s research interests include pediatric disorders of the spine and hip, pediatric sports medicine, and pediatric fractures/injuries/multi-trauma.

Theodore J. Ganley, MD

Dr. Ganley is a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and the Director of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, as well as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.His areas of expertise include sports medicine of the knee, elbow, ankle and shoulder, fractures and trauma. Dr. Ganley’s research interests include adolescent sports medicine and trauma.

B. David Horn, MD

Dr. Horn is a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His areas of expertise include disorders of the hip and spine, congenital disorders including clubfoot, DDH, cerebral palsy, general pediatric orthopaedics, fractures and trauma. Dr. Horn’s research interests include disorders of the pedatric hip, trauma and musculoskeletal infection.

Bong S. Lee, MD

Dr. Lee’s research focuses are congenital and acquired deformities of the hand.

Kenro Kusumi, PhD

Dr. Kusumi is the Director of Pediatric Orthopaedics Basic Science Research and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His research interests focus on the developmental and genetic analysis of spinal birth defects, and more specifically, the segmentation and early development of the spine, and the genetic etiology of vertebral birth defects. Angela D. Smith, MD

Dr. Smith is a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon who practices at the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery’s King of Prussia site. Her areas of expertise include sports medicine and fitness for children, adolescents, and young adults, and the sports medicine of figure skating, dance and gymnastics. Dr. Smith’s research interests include body (FIX SPACE) alignment of children, adolescents and young adults, and injuries of young competitive figure skaters.

Dave Spiegel, MD

Dr. Spiegel is a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He also serves as an Orthopaedic Consultant for the Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children in Banepa, Nepal. His areas of expertise include neuromuscular disorders, cerebral palsy, scoliosis, fractures and general pediatric orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Spiegel’s research interests include spinal deformities, neuromuscular conditions, and developing orthopaedic educational programs for developing countries.

Lawrence Wells, MD

Dr. Wells is a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His areas of expertise include sports medicine, arthroscopy, athletic injuries in shoulders, elbows and knees, and pediatric fractures and trauma. Dr. Wells’ research interests include adolescent sports medicine (particularly injuries of the shoulder and knee), pain management strategies for ambulatory surgery, trauma, minimally invasive surgery, including arthroscopic surgery, and management of osteonecrosis.

Research Fellows

Gilbert Chan, MD

Dr. Chan is a visiting research fellow from the Philippines who is spending one year in the division performing clinical research. His research interests include pediatric neuromuscular diseases, spinal deformity, lower extremity and foot and ankle deformity

Gokce Mik, MD

Dr. Mik is a visiting research fellow from Istanbul who is spending one year in the division performing clinical research. His research interests include pediatric orthopedics, tumors, limb deformity, hip dysplasia, and scoliosis.

Om Prasad Shrestha, M.B.B.S

Dr. Prasad Shrestha is a visiting research fellow from Kathmandu, Nepal who is spending one year in the division performing clinical research. His research interests include deformity correction and ilizarov ring fixation.
