Funding Opportunities
Funding for research in our division is available from a wide variety of sources, although our division itself has limited resources for funding part-time research and cannot provide stipends to visiting students and residents. Please see the list below for funding resources applicable to research in orthopaedics.
Short Term Research/Summer Scholars Funding Resources
Alpha Omega Alpha Student Research Fellowships -- $5,000
- Students must be in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year
- Application deadline: Proposals must be submitted the chapter councilor by December 31, 2007. Only one proposal per school, selected by the chapter councilor, will be sent to the national office. The final application to the national office must be postmarked no later than January 31, 2008.

Center for Excellence on Minority Health, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Medical Student Research Supplement Awards for Penn Med Students -- $2,500
- Open to minority medical students engaged in on-going research projects
Projects have focus on minority health research
- Must be at least 8 wks, at most 12 months in duration
- Application deadline: Rolling (Penn Reviewed)

NIH Research Supplements for Underrepresented Minorities
- Eligible students are African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American
- Allows faculty who hold specific, commonly held types of NIH research grants to request additional money to fund a student (Basic Science oriented)

Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Medical Student Summer Orthopaedic Research Fellowship -- $2,500
- Open to students who have an interest in Ortho.
- Program intended for summer research
- Minimum of 8 weeks, full-time work as research assistant required.

Society for Pediatric Research/American Pediatric Society -- $4,270
- Designed for students seeking research opportunity at an institution other than their own medical school.
- Research lasting 8 – 10 weeks, 30-40 hrs/week
- Application deadline: January 23, 2009

Year Long Research Funding Resources
Kathryn Cramer Memorial Award -- AO North America -- $15,000 (For living expenses incurred, traveling costs, or research grant support)
- Honors Dr. Kathryn Cramer by fostering those interested in educational and research opportunities in orthopaedics
Applicants should be:
- Medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery
- Residents and fellows pursuing careers in orthopaedic traumatology
- Orthopaedic traumatologists in their first two years of practice
Funded activities may include:
- Direct stipend for student living expenses incurred during full-time participation in pre-existing research projects
- Traveling fellowship: Can include multiple brief stays, or a long stay
- Travel involvement for charitable programs
- Research grant support for new resident research projects
Application deadline: June 15, 2009 for funding to begin September 1.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Research Fellowship -- $25,000 (incl. health insurance, travel monies for research meeting, and supplementary research and training funds)
- Students are eligible after their 2nd or 3rd year of medical school
- Students must participate in research for 12 months
- The CRF period begins no earlier than July 1, 2006 , and ends June 30, 2007 (varies depending on school calendar)

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Training Programs-Medical Fellows Program -- $27,000 (plus $5,500 for health care and other expenses, and $5,500 research allowance)
- Enables medical and dental students to do a year of basic, translational, or applied biomedical research at any school or non-profit
- A small number of students may be selected to do a second year
- Application deadline: January 2009

Note:
Medical students visiting our division have had particular recent success obtaining grants from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK-see the Upenn funding site for more infomation) and from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF).
Medical students from other schools should consult their own student affairs offices for listings of applicable funding sources.
