Funding Opportunities

Funding for research in our division is available from a wide variety of sources, although our division itself has limited resources for funding part-time research and cannot provide stipends to visiting students and residents. Please see the list below for funding resources applicable to research in orthopaedics.

Short Term Research/Summer Scholars Funding Resources

Alpha Omega Alpha Student Research Fellowships -- $5,000

Center for Excellence on Minority Health, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Medical Student Research Supplement Awards for Penn Med Students -- $2,500

Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Medical Student Summer Orthopaedic Research Fellowship -- $2,500

Year Long Research Funding Resources

Kathryn Cramer Memorial Award -- AO North America -- $15,000 (For living expenses incurred, traveling costs, or research grant support)

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Research Fellowship -- $25,000 (incl. health insurance, travel monies for research meeting, and supplementary research and training funds)

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Training Programs-Medical Fellows Program -- $27,000 (plus $5,500 for health care and other expenses, and $5,500 research allowance)

Note:

Medical students visiting our division have had particular recent success obtaining grants from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK-see the Upenn funding site for more infomation) and from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF).

Medical students from other schools should consult their own student affairs offices for listings of applicable funding sources.

Residents seeking funding have also had recent success with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Fund. More information about grants is available at http://www.oref.org/grants. Residency directors will be able to provide more extensive lists of funding sources.
