The Center for Outcomes Research (COR) provides researchers in various divisions of Children's Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania with data management and statistical support for analyses of large administrative and clinical databases. The computer system at the COR is a 2-way HP RP5405 UNIX-based server. It is located on the 10th floor of 3535 Market Street and sits on its own private offline network for security purposes. The system has dual 650 MHz processors, 16 GB of RAM and 5,044 GB of hard disk capacity. A HP Ultrium tape library serves as a system-wide backup. A DVD ROM, an HP SureStore Ultrium 200 GB tape drive, a 40e DAT tape drive, a 200 GB magneto-optical storage device, a TD3600 series 3490E cartridge tape subsystem and a 9 track SE SCSI tape drive are optimized for handling medical research data on variety of media.

To facilitate access to the COR UNIX system, the COR established a satellite site in the Child Health Services Research and Epidemiology Center on the 15th floor of 3535 Market Street. Pediatric healthcare researchers can access the COR system from the satellite site using the site's PCs, which have software that enables them to become UNIX terminals. These PCs are connected to the UNIX system by a special off-line cable that runs to the COR's server on the 10th floor of 3535 Market Street. This satellite site enables researchers to access their data from a terminal, without having to come to the COR.

COR faculty and staff are equipped with networked PCs to access e-mail, databases and the Internet. PC users can access five HP LaserJet printers. The Children's Hospital Information Technology Department provides all services on PCs at the COR.
