Dr. Bell is chief of the Division of General Pediatrics and medical director of the Hospital's practice-based research network (PBRN). Dr. Bell is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the holder of the Patrick S. Pasquariello Jr. Endowed Chair in Pediatrics. As medical director of the Pediatric Research Consortium, Dr. Bell is responsible for ensuring that the interests of both the primary care pediatricians and the researchers are considered within the context of practice-based research.

In his role as network director, Mr. Massey is responsible for theoperational oversight of the network including administrative andfinancial planning for future research endeavors. He works closely withmany of the investigative teams throughout the process: from initialgrant application to development of electronic charting tools andcomprehensive data reports. In addition, he serves as a critical liaisonbetween the primary care practices and clinical researchers. Mr. Masseyhas clinical nursing experience in both inpatient and outpatient arenasand has successfully facilitated numerous clinical research trials withindustry and government sponsors at Children's Hospital.

Dr. Haecker is the chief medical officer for ambulatory at Children's Hospital. She is responsible for the clinical oversight of all research activity within the primary care network and serves as an advocate for the clinical staff within the practices. She emphasizes maintaining the linkages and communication structure between the primary care practices in the PBRN and the clinical investigative teams.

Ms. Kanak is the research nurse coordinator at PeRC. She began her career at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s University City Primary Care Center, serving in the capacity of asthma nurse champion. She utilizes this experience as a basis for understanding each of the Kid’s First and Primary Care Centers’ individual operating practices and needs in contributing to research initiatives as a part of the PeRC team.

Alexander Fiks, MD

Dr. Fiks is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Children's Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is a physician leader for the implementation of the Children's Hospital electronic health record as well as the principal investigator for multiple projects investigating the role of the electronic health record in understanding and improving immunization delivery. In addition, he has recently collaborated with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on a multi-year project to determine the validity of reported varicella history as a marker for varicella-zoster virus immunity conducted through the practice-based research network.

Clinical Reporting Unit (CRU):

PeRC works in collaboration with the Center for Biomedical Informatics' Clinical Reporting Unit to provide data extraction, curation and reporting capabilities that ensure a quality, seamless experience for the researcher.

Robert W. Grundmeier, MD

Dr. Grundmeier is board certified in pediatrics and has worked as a pediatrician for six years in Primary Care Centers at Children's Hospital. He is the director of clinical informatics (CBMi) in the Center for Biomedical Informatics and leads efforts to use the electronic health record (EHR) for clinical research and knowledge delivery. Dr. Grundmeier is an accomplished programmer with experience in database reporting tools and user-interface design and has served as the physician analyst for the EHR implementation team. He has several years experience developing software for engineering and medicine needs.

On Children's Hospital's electronic health record project, Dr. Grundmeier is instrumental in working with physician groups and clinical leadership to establish consensus on key design decisions. He is familiar with all aspects of customizing the EHR and oversees development and maintenance the majority of clinical documentation tools used in the EHR. Most recently, Dr. Grundmeier has been assisting clinical researchers at Children's Hospital to obtain pilot data for grant preparation, develop patient enrollment strategies, and manage the research data once the project is underway. He has supported a multitude of research projects on topics ranging from documentation completeness, infant feeding, asthma, childhood development, psychiatric disease and trauma. In addition, he has demonstrated tremendous talent to maximize the use of the EHR for cost effective and high quality outcomes research.

Jonathan Crossette, MPH

Mr. Crossette is the manager of the Clinical Reporting Unit (CRU) for CBMi. He was part of the team that selected and implemented the EHR used in Children's Hospital's Primary Care Centers. Currently, Mr. Crossette directs the clinical reporting activities that take advantage of the EHR's extensive data set. The contributions of Mr. Crossette and his team are critical to providing accurate, relevant clinical data to the researchers within the PeRC network.
