The New York Times Highlights Research Enabled by the Clinical Reporting Unit

A recent study led by Children's Hospital researcher Ron Keren, MD, has found that chronic administration of antibiotics following urinary tract infection may not beneficially decrease recurrence of the infection and may actually increase the potential for antibiotic resistance.

The study, published in the July 11 edition of The Journal of the American Medical Association, was highlighted in The New York Times' Health section, indicating the importance of the finding to current practice.

Robert Grundmeier, MD, FAAP, of the Hospital's Clinical Reporting Unit (CRU), a unit within the Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMi), contributed to the article by compiling the large amounts of data necessary to drive the study's statistics.

The system-wide data capture emphasizes the strengths associated with the Hospital's distributed healthcare network and its implementation of electronic health records. In all, 29 primary care centers, representing three states and multiple suburban and urban patient populations, yielded close to 75,000 data points. Observations were collected over a five-year period.
