South Campus
Research at Children’s Hospital continues to grow at an astounding rate. The number of research projects requires increased facilities to support investigators, their staff and administrative offices. To continue to fulfill its mission as a leader in patient care, research and teaching, Children’s Hospital is undergoing one of the largest and most ambitious healthcare expansion projects in the nation. A new South Campus is being designed to include space dedicated for both clinical care and research activities.
The planned facilities will be in close proximity to the Main Hospital, Abramson Research Center and University of Pennsylvania research buildings. Approximately 8 acres of the 20-acre site will be devoted to Children’s Hospital development; the University of Pennsylvania will develop the remaining 12 acres.
This concept for the future illustrates the potential design of the South Campus and the functions that the new Hospital buildings will have. The clinical component will be complemented by approximately one million square feet that will be dedicated to basic science research, 500,000 square feet to clinical research and 200,000 square feet to devoted to supporting basic science and other research-related resources. When completed, the addition of the South Campus will nearly double the size of the Hospital’s presence in the University City section of Philadelphia.
An artistic rendition provides an idea of what the South Campus research buildings may look like after construction is completed. The project began in 2000, and will be completed in stages with completion of the first facilities and required infrastructure expected by 2008; construction of the remaining programmatic elements will extend over the next decade.
