Clinical and Translational Research

Office of Clinical and Translational Research

Clinical and translational research are critical components for the success of the mission of the Stokes Institute and Children's Hospital. Such research is needed to ensure that the rapid advances in biomedical sciences can be efficiently moved into patient-oriented research in a scientifically rigorous, pediatric centric manner. The Clinical and Translational Research (OCTR), works with investigators from across the spectrum of our scientific community to focus efforts and resources for this growing research discipline.

The OCTR assists clinical and translational investigators in identifying scientific opportunities and in forging productive collaborations throughout the Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania. With the increasing complexities involved in conducting clinical and translational research, the OCTR develops and implements improvements in the clinical and administrative research infrastructure, including working with the leaders of the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects, the Office of Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs, the General Clinical Research Center and the Clinical Trials Office to support investigators in their efforts to translate laboratory advances to the clinic and back again to the bench.

Clinical Trials Office

The Clinical Trials Office (CTO) serves as the central focal point for clinical research activity at Children's Hospital and provides leadership, collegiality and guidance to all study coordinators and other personnel. The office includes a core facility of experienced and well-trained study coordinators and sets standards for the development of study budgets and business practices related to clinical research, performance and record keeping in clinical research and for training study personnel. The CTO also performs quality assurance for trials not undertaken by its study coordinators, serves as a contact between principal investigators and sponsors interested in conducting research at the Hospital and represents the Hospital at all FDA audits.
